Overview

During my internship at Tweek Labs, we onboarded a client who wanted to diversify the Tweek app's functionalities for people who do not own motion capture suits.

I led the end-to-end design direction of the Tweek Labs app V2.0, which involved addition of new pages, feed, and played a pivotal role in conceptualizing the problem space.

The sports community met the app's launch with outstanding sentiment, and our client successfully accepted the idea.

About the company

Tweek Labs creates motion capture suits to capture full-body movement. These suits connect to users phones or smartwatches and stream data to the cloud, where it's processed to generate a full-body analysis.

Methodology

-I conducted shadow studies during the Tweek Labs’ workshop in Raipur and Delhi.

-I pinpointed crucial opportunity scopes during the app usage by conducting UX research.

-Motivated to document everything, I successfully concluded our primary research and began empathizing with the users.

Improvement Scope

Persona

Based on primary research, to understand the users better, I conducted 1:1 interviews. I created a user persona for a player to understand their behavior and how they interact with the app, aiming to figure out the directions in which I can diversify the app.

Design goals

To expand the app's functionality without compromising its Unique Selling Proposition (USP), I actively contributed by maintaining a focus on two key goals as we progressed.

1. My contributions included ensuring the app continued to offer in-depth full-body movement analysis through Tweek Labs' motion capture suits, a feature central to its value.

2. Additionally, I led the effort to implement a straightforward design, aiming to streamline the development and deployment processes, thereby enhancing efficiency and user experience.

To accelerate the design process and ensure design uniformity,

I contributed by advocating for the use of Google's Material Design guidelines for iOS and Android. This strategic decision facilitated easier development and deployment of the app.

It not only streamlined our workflow but also enriched my understanding of how applying a consistent design framework can significantly impact the efficiency and coherence of app development across different platforms.

Ideation

In response to the opportunity scope and to minimize the pain points identified during my research, I initiated a brainstorming session.

My contribution during the ideation phase included the addition of two new tabs to the app's navbar: Training and Schedule.

Training

Training includes personalised recommendations, improvement drills, regimes designed by coaches.

Schedule

Schedule lets user get the schedule for upcoming Tweek Lab workshops.

Ideation

These additions were aimed at enriching the user experience by providing more structured and accessible content to our users. These screens could be used even by the people who do not own Tweek Kit (hardware) for full - body motion analysis.

Learnings

While empathizing with users is crucial, but in real life company goals matter as much.

Documentation is very important for the benefit of the team and the organization since design process is not linear. It's more dynamic and iterative.

Collaborate closely with the development team, taking a leadership role in guiding design decisions.

Possible future direction

A better process

Would have created wireframes before creating the Hi-Fi prototype.

User testing

Would have conducted user testing for the prototype on field during a workshop.

Design completion

A complete Tweek Lab 2.0 app design with new components and screens.

Design system

Would have enhanced the design system for the Tweek Lab 2.0 as the app features changed.

Nine months later, Tweek Labs is still actively using UI assets crafted by yours truly during the internship. Moreover, my work at Tweek Labs was more than just this. I also designed collaterals, design system components, social media assets, infographics for them!

Congratulations for making it till here!
